WHEN THE COATING IS GONE, THE SURFACE CHANGES THE QUESTION.
When sections of an old coating have released and the wood underneath is exposed, the surface is telling us that the protective layer is no longer doing its full job.
What the picture does not tell us is just as important. Visible coating loss does not automatically mean the wood is rotten, the deck is unsafe, or everything needs to be replaced.
The right next step is to inspect the exposed wood, identify any repairs that are actually needed, determine what coating remains, and build the preparation and finishing plan around the condition of the surface.
Good restoration work begins with understanding what is there before deciding what comes next.
